3 Tips to Speak Respectably About Disabilities

Language shapes our perceptions. Here are 3 ways to speak respectfully about disabilities:

  1. Avoid Pity: Don’t say, “I’m sorry” when someone mentions their disability. Instead, show interest and respect.

  2. Respect Preferences: Some people prefer identity-first language (e.g., "autistic person"), while others prefer person-first (e.g., "person with autism"). Ask and respect their preference.

  3. Mind Your Tone: Avoid condescending or patronizing tones. Speak to everyone with the same respect.

Words matter. Let’s use them to uplift and respect.
