Glenn Harger Receives Top Honor at UCP's 2011 National Conference

NEW ORLEANS, LA - On Monday, April 11, United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile and Central Alabama's Glenn R. Harger was chosen as the latest recipient of the Kathleen O. Maul Leadership Award during

United Cerebral Palsy's 2011 Annual Conference in New Orleans. This award is given by peers from over 100 national and international affiliates and recognizes the top executive having outstanding leadership within his or her affiliate, city, county and state.

The Kathleen O. Maul Leadership Award is named in memory of Kathy Maul, an executive director from UCP of Suffolk. Kathy left a legacy of a commitment to UCP and exemplary leadership ability. The award has been presented annually since her death to an exceptional executive director in the network who demonstrates those same qualities. Last year's recipient was Ronald S. Cohen, President and Chief Executive Officer of United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

In 1989, Glenn Harger joined United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile as its Executive Director. Since that time, his contributions to the agency have created financial growth from a $379,000 budget to over $4 million in 2010. In addition, the programs offered went from four to 12, and the employee base grew from 12 to 80. This prosperity comes as a direct result of Harger's hard work and willingness to do what is right for his community and the individuals who receive services from his agency.

Prior to his start with UCP of Mobile, he worked for seven years as a staff officer with the United States Jaycees in Tulsa, Oklahoma before moving back to his home state of Alabama where he served as the Director for the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama's Convention and Visitors Bureau.  A few years later, he took the post of Executive Director at United Cerebral Palsy of Western Alabama. While there, he grew the operating budget from $175,000 (in 1986) to $475,000 (in 1989) and established three satellite offices to provide services to ten rural counties in west Alabama.

Glenn Harger has a strong history of giving within his community. He currently serves as President of the Alabama Barbecue Association and is the Immediate Past President of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club.  Harger is on the United Way of Southwest Alabama Executive Director Council and is a founding member of the South Alabama Coalition of Nonprofits. In addition, he contributes to numerous state committees regarding disabilities.
